All exposed surfaces recommended to be sealed with a clear sealer

Cleaning

Excess mortar, filler or tile adhesive should be wiped off at the laying stage, using a wet rag.
If mortar adheres then acid cleaning can be carried out using 10% acid solution, with thorough rinsing before and after application.

Laying

Compressive strength rating is not given due to the open design of the block products.
Blocks are nominally 90mm wide, and designed to be laid with an 8 to 12 mm mortar joint.
3D tiles are designed to be laid with a 2 to 4 mm joint and adhered using a commercially available tile adhesive.
Breeze blocks at exposed locations are recommended to be laid with two x 6mm galvanised rods, anchored into surrounding brickwork, or as advised by a structural engineer.

Painting Preparation

Prior to painting, seal the surface with a clear sealer.

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING FOR BREEZE BLOCK WALLS

8mm diameter rods are to be used to give flexural strength to breeze block walls. These are laid in the mortar joint in pairs, and secured into the supporting walls and foundation or base. see the guide for examples.

STREET FENCING

City of Stirling ‘Street Walls and Fences Information Sheet’:
Development approval for your street wall or fence is not required if it complies with the following:

Solid portions of street walls or fences are permitted to a maximum 1.2 m high;
Portions of street walls or fences above 1.2 m must be visually permeable;
The overall height of the street walls or fence must be a maximum of 1.8m high;
The horizontal dimension of the pillars or piers may not exceed 400mm by 400mm.

Visual Permeability

City of Stirling gives the following guidelines: ‘Visually permeable’ is defined by the Residential Design Codes – Volume 1 as: In reference to a wall, gate, door, screen or fence that the vertical surface when viewed directly from the street or other public space has:

continuous vertical or horizontal gaps of 50mm or greater width occupying not less than one third of the total surface area;
continuous vertical or horizontal gaps less than 50mm in width, occupying at least one half of the total surface area in aggregate; or
a surface offering equal or lesser obstruction to view.

Interpretation for breeze blocks: Gaps or holes are over 50mm, therefore “not less than 1/3rd of the total area should be obstructed”, ie permeability over 33% is required for fencing using breeze blocks.

Permeability of each block is given in the product data, including allowance for a 10mm mortar joint.
